Nutrition

When it comes to nutrition many people are for the most part just confused! There is so much conflicting information out there it’s difficult to know what/who to believe! I hope that during our time working together that I can shed some light on what is good, not so good and what is best avoided.

I will give you personalised nutritional advice based on your current diet and goals going forward.

Making changes to your diet is not often easy but after just a couple of weeks of eating a good, nutritious, balanced and most importantly delicious food you will feel so many benefits that sticking to it won’t feel like such a chore.

Also, I won’t be asking you to cut out anything forever, I’m a big believer in balance and it’s unrealistic for us to say that we are never going to have a glass of wine or a slice of chocolate cake again!

I will help you find this balance so that you can enjoy a night out or a birthday party without ruining your nutrition and goals for the week. The first thing that I will be telling you is to look at this as a lifestyle change and not a diet as such.

Diets Don’t Work

If I straw polled the people of Cardiff, I think a large percentage of them will have tried a fad diet or five in their time!  In our modern world of instant gratification many people are drawn to the promises of fast and dramatic results. Many diet products promise the possibility to drop stones and stones of weight in a very short amount of time. This is not only very dangerous but the results are extremely short lived and the effects these diets have on our bodies and metabolisms are frightening. These diets promote massive calorie reduction – eating only shakes and meal replacements forcing the body into starvation mode.  The result of this is that the body holds on to the fat and the weight loss is mainly made up of water and muscle mass (which is vital for keeping your metabolism working well). Although the dieter will lose lots of weight – they will pile on the pounds as soon as they start eating again and it’s likely that the weight gain will be greater than that originally lost! The effect the diet has had on the metabolism will mean that losing weight in the future will be twice as hard as the body is now burning calories at an extremely slow pace.    Instead of following a diet as such I recommend eating a healthy and balanced diet which is something you can sustain long term and I will discuss with you in person either before or after a boot camp session or during our Personal Training consultation.

Clean Eating

What I would recommend is eating ‘clean’. Clean eating is basically just about eating REAL FOOD! It’s about eating ingredients rather than foods with ingredients. It’s about eating meat and fish with vegetables and salad and then snacking on fruit and nuts! It’s about eating food that our ancestors used to eat, food that is produced naturally and that will allow us to live a healthy, happier and hopefully longer life. It’s about cutting out processed and packaged foods from our diet, cutting out sugar and sweeteners that are highly toxic and addictive and that play havoc with our blood sugar levels and that make us crave more and more unhealthy foods. I will go through this with you in more detail when we meet and I will also send you a nutrition information pack detailing all the foods you should include in your diet and those which you should avoid.

Failing to Prepare is Preparing to Fail

Clean eating is easy to follow and to understand, however, in order to succeed preparation and organisation is key. I would recommend planning what you are going to eat for the week, doing a weekly shop if you can and cooking about three times what you need for each dinner – this way you’ll have leftovers for lunch the next day and you can eat or freeze another dinner. Alternatively, you can set aside an hour or two on a Sunday evening to cook for the week. If you have a fridge full of ready prepared meals and a freezer full of frozen veg there will always be something quick and super healthy for your lunch and dinner however busy you are – no excuses.

Lots of Support

During our personal training consultation or when you sign up to one of my boot camp classes we will have a long chat about nutrition and I can advise you what changes you may need to make based on your goals and what you currently eat at the moment. You will also be given a 20 page nutrition e-document with all the information you will need as well as a 100 recipe cook book with loads of delicious recipe ideas.
